Foods That Cause Heartburn – What You Should Know About Acid Reflux and Heartburn

By Mikael G.J.

The foods that cause heartburn are easy to identify. Some of the most common culprits are fried foods, acidic and citrus fruits, chocolate and tomatoes. Other foods that cause heartburn include eggs, fatty meats, peppermint, onions, garlic, honey, curry, spicy foods, peppermint and coca cola. Although these are foods that cause heartburn, some people get heartburn from consuming other foods as well. This is especially true when it comes to dairy products and breads.

Heartburn occurs when the stomach acid goes up too far into the esophagus. Food that induce heartburn include peppermint, tomatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, and spicy foods. Eating large amounts of foods that induce heartburn can result in serious damage to the esophagus. If left untreated, it may result in a condition called Barrett’s esophagus. Barrett’s esophagus is an abnormal connection between the stomach and the esophagus that cause the stomach acids to travel too far into the esophagus.

When stomach acid is forced into the esophagus, it breaks down the walls of the stomach that allows the stomach acids to leak back into the food. This can cause a variety of different symptoms including: difficulty breathing, hoarseness, chest pain, nausea, and excessive salivation. Because of this, many people suffer from chronic heartburn. Fortunately, treating chronic heartburn is generally simple since the problem lies within the stomach itself.

In order to treat heartburn, the food that causes it should first be eliminated or reduced in size. Next, foods that trigger heartburn should be added to the diet in small doses. Some of the foods that cause heartburn are tomatoes, bananas, citrus fruits, and spicy foods like peppermint. By eliminating or reducing the amount of these foods that cause heartburn, patients will begin to feel better.

In addition, there are a few other foods that cause heartburn, but they are not as common or serious as foods that cause acid reflux. Some of these foods include milk and some types of cheese. Alcohol is another culprit and can lead to heartburn by causing pressure in the stomach area. Cutting out caffeine and alcohol completely can drastically reduce the amount of acid that leaks into the esophagus.

Another thing that can cause heartburn is eating foods that are too fatty. Fatty foods are often in large quantities at meals, especially when there are a lot of people eating. When the stomach acids have nowhere to go, they will force their way out into the esophagus, causing acid reflux. By switching to a diet that consists of smaller portions and decreasing the amount of fatty foods that are eaten can help to prevent heartburn and its associated symptoms.
