Heartburn isn’t fun, but unfortunately it’s a common symptom of several different digestive disorders. Heartburn is a discomforting burning sensation in the chest which can also go upward your throat and into your neck. This is a very common symptom of several different diseases, including GERD, acid reflux and pregnancy. If you’re experiencing heartburn often, you might also experience a sour or bitter taste at the back of the throat.

There are several different causes for heartburn. In fact, you’re probably experiencing heartburn without even knowing it. Many people experience heartburn symptoms when they consume certain foods, such as garlic or onions, chocolate or carbonated drinks. By understanding what these foods are, you’ll be able to find a way to alleviate the burning feeling so you can get some relief.

For instance, if you find that you have heartburn quite often after you eat citrus fruits, it might be a good idea to avoid citrus fruits altogether until you can figure out what’s causing the problem. As citrus fruits naturally have a lot of acid, they can easily lead to heartburn. The same goes for caffeinated beverages. You don’t need to pop open a cold one to get rid of the pain. Instead, limit your intake of caffeinated beverages to no more than four ounces per day and see if it helps.

Other things that can trigger heartburn include fatty foods, spices, mucus and acidic foods like tomatoes. Limit your consumption of fatty foods, and eliminate them from your diet completely if you want to get rid of heartburn. Caffeine is another culprit, and you should cut it out entirely unless you absolutely have to have your morning cup of coffee. Drinking coffee too much can cause a stronger than normal acids in your stomach, and this can lead to heartburn.

If you’re having a persistent burning feeling down your throat and into your stomach, you could have a symptom known as heartburn throat pain. This burning sensation is typically located on the top of your throat and feels similar to a burning chest pain. Some people experience a hacking or tightening sensation from their chest down to their stomach. This symptom can be very painful when swallowing. If this starts to happen, it’s probably a case of heartburn throat pain.

The most serious form of heartburn symptoms is esophagitis. Esophagitis is when stomach contents are re-circulated through the bloodstream instead of staying in the lower intestine. Severe heartburn can lead to this condition, and you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Heartburn symptoms should always be taken seriously. They not only affect you physically, they affect your mental health as well.
